Praise for University of Miami’s Residential Colleges
Posted by R. J. O’Hara for the Collegiate Way
30 March 2004 (collegiateway.org) — In a letter to the editor in the 30 March issue of the Miami Herald, Alex Mechaber, Master of Stanford College at the University of Miami, extolls the benefits of Miami’s residential colleges:
In 1984, UM’s residential-college system was established to foster the social, cultural and educational development of undergraduate residents in an environment where living and learning are intertwined. Faculty Masters and their families live together with undergraduate students in each of the five residential colleges on the Coral Gables campus.
Today, student life in these residential colleges is among the university’s most cherished and singular traditions. They are much more than traditional student dormitories, each contributing to a vibrant and intellectual realm outside of the classroom.
