Middlebury Opens First of Five Residential Colleges
Posted by R. J. O’Hara for the Collegiate Way
16 September 2002 (collegiateway.org) — Middlebury College in Vermont is establishing a system of residential colleges, called Commons, within itself. Each of Middlebury’s five Commons is made up of 400–500 members, each has a faculty master and a dean, and the first of five planned dining halls opened this past week in Ross Commons. Although Middlebury College is a relatively small institution, with 2200 students, it is the same size Harvard and Yale Universities were when they began to plan their residential college systems in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Congratulations to the members of Ross Commons and to all involved in this excellent work—one down, four to go!
