GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Tree Decorating Tea is Coming!

The Tea before the Grand Holiday Tea every year is the Tree Decorating Tea, and this year we will be decorating our College tree on Tuesday, November 30th, from 4:30–5:30 p.m. in the JCR. Come help set it up and hang the ornaments! The tree will stay up all through the holidays and will be taken down at the first Tea of the new year!

The Grand Holiday Tea and Penny Drive is Coming Too!

The Grand Holiday Tea and Penny Drive, one of the big events of the Strong College year, will be Tuesday, December 7th. Mark your calendars today! Krista Noll will be preparing a beautiful signature page for us, and food, fun, friends, and song will be in abundance. Come join everyone in the Strong College family for this delightful annual tradition. If you miss it, your grandchildren will never forgive you.

The Next Star Party!

The last chance you will have to view the heavens through the Strong College telescope during 1999 will be on Wednesday, December 1st, at 10:00 p.m. These Star Parties have been a grand success, so be sure to be there!

“Mr. Daniel Looks Like a Spaniel.”

Another Strong College holiday tradition is Dr. O’Hara’s annual reading of A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas. This year’s reading will be on Thursday, December 2nd, at 8:00 p.m. in the Senior Common Room. Like the Holiday Tea, your grandchildren will never forgive you if you miss it, so be there!

Appointments of Distinction

A number of Strong College people are holding positions of distinction in various campus organizations this semester. Jennifer Parry-Hill is the President and Melissa Feimster is the Vice President of Eta Sigma Pi, the Classics Honor Society. Bruce Caldwell has just been elected Recording Secretary of the UNCG chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and Mark Schumacher has just been appointed a Member-at-Large of the Phi Beta Kappa Executive Committee. Congratulations to all!

Borders Bookstore Breakaway!

The last Borders Bookstore Breakaway of 1999 will be on Sunday, December 5th, leaving from the JCR at 1:00 p.m. Join Michelle Marcelais and a Strong College host to do some shopping for the holidays!

Strong College Journalists!

A vast horde of Strong College people are working for The Carolinian this year in a variety of capacities. Take a look at the masthead and the by-lines and you will see our own Kelly White, Jennifer Osborne, “Paul Russell,” Kate Peeples, Sherrill Hayes, Jon Buford, Deanna Lambert, Tammy Thorarinson, Tiffany Tillman, and April Berry. Congratulations to them all for contributing to the success of The Carolinian this year!

Ad Astra

Our own Elizabeth Hargrove has donated another collection of magazines to us—thank you, Elizabeth!

Bob O’Hara, Sharon Sullivan, and Carrie Bogart have been out collecting pine cones in Peabody Park to make a holiday wreath for Strong College. Come to Tea to see if they have made any progress.

Poem-of-the-Week

The Poem-of-the-Week appears regularly in this space. This week’s poem is a Malthusian meditation by Emily Dickinson, written about 1862:

How many Flowers fail in Wood –
Or perish from the Hill –
Without the privilege to know
That they are Beautiful –

How many cast a nameless Pod
Upon the nearest Breeze –
Unconscious of the Scarlet Freight –
It bear to Other Eyes –

OFFICIAL DISCLAIMERS: Nothing here is official. Please don’t sue us. I want my CSC. Take that lemur off your head right now. There’s nothing worse than a pretentious octopus. A vague disclaimer is nobody’s friend. No fungi, no future. I feel an interpretive lobster dance coming on. Crash outcomes may vary. There are people praying in my card parlor. I’ve dated about three-quarters of the alphabet. No, I’m not dating Satan. A college without an Italian Princess is hardly a college at all. This does represent the official policy of James Elroy Flecker. I’m the Official Strong College Crazy Person. Who needs to work hard when you have extortion. You’re just jealous of my thick glossy coat. Eeeew, she wrote “gurge.” When you live in the water it’s hard to keep your hair neat. It’s a good thing he has an exoskeleton. If this works out, you may be able to live in a glass ball on Mars. Who needs boys when you have a kickass car. Color swirls are a natural occurrence. I like boxes. Mary needs some lemur lovin’. Stuffed with polyester fiber. If you experience eye watering, headaches, or dizziness, increase fresh air or wear respiratory protection. It’s hard being secret agents. Everything’s better with a halo. The better our fantasies are, the better our realities can become. Second star to the right, and straight on till morning. If we succeed there will be many songs sung in our honor. A decent boldness ever meets with friends. Think continually of those who were truly great. Risk—risk is our business; that’s what this starship is all about; that’s why we’re aboard her. Without struggle, there is no progress. Per aspera ad astra!
