GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Library Thanks

The Strong College Library is open again for the semester for your reading, studying, sleeping, and e-mailing pleasure. Special thanks go to Cecilia Ruth Lance, College Librarian, and Dr. O’Hara (who spent a whole evening getting the computers working again). Our crack team of librarians for the semester includes: Kim Fales, Erin Fox, Jessica Helms, Curtis Ostrom, Tim Owens, Amanda Parks, Stephanie Parrish, Jen Stumpf, Lam Tran, and Emily Triplett, with alternates Mohamed Abdel-Halim, C.J. Heidel, and Mary Minter. We wouldn’t have a Library at all if it were not for all these dedicated workers—thank them!

New Members of the College!

Strong College has added two more members this past week, one new and one returning. Josh Lister has joined Rodney Garrison in room 168 (x1195), and our alumna Durenda Johnson, a Strong College staff member for two years and now a graduate student, has returned to us from Phillips-Hawkins and is happily ensconced in room 273 (x1286). Welcome, Josh, and welcome back, Durenda!

The Cornelian Prize

The deadline for entries in the Cornelian Prize competition is February 19th. The prize is open to all undergraduates in the University, and will be awarded to the best prose work of fewer than 400 words on a designated subject. The subject for this year’s competition is “The Storm.” The value of the prize is $200, and all entries must be submitted anonymously. For more details see the announcements posted on the bulletin boards around the College, or follow the Cornelian Prize link on the Strong College web page. Even if you are not entering yourself, why not encourage your literary friends all across campus to do so!

Room Sign-up for Next Fall

Important information about room sign-up for next fall has been posted around the College. All students who wish to return to their current rooms should have already signed up to do so this past week. Students who wish to remain in the building but move to a different room will sign up on February 3rd (seniors and graduate students) and 4th (all others). Please read the posted information carefully if you intend to return to Strong College next year (which we certainly hope you all do!).

Global Economy

Our own Andy Winternitz spent a lot of time travelling through Europe last year, and he has just donated to the College a collection of coins from many countries, including Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Japan, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland. These will be added to the College coin collection with thanks! Stop by the College Office to look them over. And if you want to see some of the places that Andy visited, go to the Strong College web site and follow the link to Strong College Around the World. There you will find pictures of Andy (in his Strong College tee shirt) in Germany and the Czech Republic.

Ad Astra

Dr. O’Hara’s Book-of-the-Week this week is Palm Reading: A Little Guide to Life’s Secrets by Dennis Fairchild, on loan from Krista Karbowski’s Library of the Occult. (Tim the Lemur is trying to learn how to read palms, but his hand doesn’t seem to match any of the pictures in the book.) Stop by the College Office and browse it today!

The name of Rebecca McDonald was inadvertently left off the list of recipients of the Senior Tutor’s Award in the last Newsletter. Congratulations to Rebecca!

Are you wearing your tattoo? Free Strong College tattoos are available in the Strong College Office right now! (The first one is free, extras are 25¢ each.) Impress your friends! Frighten your parents! Pick yours up today!

Security Officer Alice Chavez has just donated another big assortment of magazines to Strong College—watch for them to appear in the Library and the JCR very soon. Thank you, Officer Chavez!

Poem-of-the-Week

The Poem-of-the-Week is posted on the bulletin board outside the College Office and is usually reprinted here. This week’s poem, suggested by something Dr. Caldwell said last week when a group of Fellows were having lunch, is Gerard Manly Hopkins’ “Pied Beauty” (1918), in honor of the students of the College:

Glory be to God for dappled things—
  For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
    For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches wings;
  Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;
    And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange;
  Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
    With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
  He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change.
    Praise him.
