GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Visitors are Coming

Over the next few days Strong College will be hosting a number of prospective UNCG students who are visiting the campus under the auspices of the Admissions Office. If you see any of them wandering around please make them feel at home and welcome!

A Rhapsody of Words!

There will be a Strong College field trip this Saturday (February 22nd) to go the new movie version of Hamlet, and you are invited! The College Council is sponsoring the trip, and we will be gathering in the JCR at 1:15 p.m. (Dr. White is rumored to be buying the popcorn for everyone!) There’s a sign-up sheet on the door to the College Office just to help us get an idea of how many people want to go. Please come along!

Per Aspera

The Senior Tutor was out sick for a number of days at the beginning of this month (and was even in the hospital for a while), but he has made his way back and is happy to be in Strong company again. He extends his thanks to all the men and women of Strong College who offered their good wishes while he was out of service, and he is especially grateful to everyone who helped to keep the College running smoothly in his absence.

Ad Astra

Chris Beaver donated a very fine copy of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations to the Strong College Library. Look for it on the shelves very soon. Thank you, Chris!

Congratulations to Tim Owens and the Blue Lemur Coffee Bar which has just celebrated its first anniversary. The Blue Lemur is the place to be every Monday night—stop in this week and start its second year off right. The coffee and conversation are always free!

Strapped for Strong Cash?

Are you looking for a way to acquire a few more Strong dollars to cash in for chocolate in the College Office or to save up for that coveted Strong College tee shirt? Then take your chances next Wednesday during Poker Night, hosted by our own College Croupiers Scott Thomason and Chris Beaver. Each Wednesday night the winning players can cash in their chips for one or more Strong dollars. Step right in to the Committee Room at 9:00 p.m. and pull up a chair. Everyone is welcome!

Poem-of-the-Week

The Strong College Poem-of-the-Week is posted on the bulletin board outside the College Office and is usually reprinted here. February is African-American History Month, and this week’s poem is Enoch Sontonga’s hymn Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika (1897), the national anthem of South Africa (presented in both Xhosa and English):

Nkosi, sikelel’ iAfrika;
Malupakam’upondo lwayo;
Yiva imitandazo yetu
Usisikelele.

(Chorus)
Yihla Moya, Yihla Moya,
Yihla Moya Oyingcwele

Sikelela iNkosi zetu;
Zimkumbule umDali wazo;
Zimoyike zezimhlouele,
Azisikelele.

Sikelel’ amadol’ esizwe,
Sikelela kwa nomlisela
Ulitwal’ilizwe ngomonde,
Uwusikilele.

Lord, bless Africa;
May her horn rise high up;
Hear Thou our prayers
And bless us.

(Chorus)
Descend, O Spirit,
Descend, O Holy Spirit.

Bless our chiefs,
May they remember their Creator.
Fear Him and revere Him,
That He may bless them.

Bless the public men,
Bless also the youth
That they may carry the land with patience
and that Thou mayst bless them.
