GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Art Show!
The annual Strong College Art Show is now running each week at Tea! Who is the Art Show for? It is for you! Do you have a creation of any kind that you would like to show? Just bring it down to Tea to have it included on the spot as a late entry. All media are welcome, from painting to sculpture to photographs to drawings to songs to even poems about feathers. See College Council President Heather Lloyd for more information, and join in!
Peabody Park Photos
A few of Dr. O’Hara’s natural history photos of Peabody Park have just been published in the second issue of the UNCG Magazine, along with a short essay about the Park and its history. Stop by the Office to have a look today!
Courses for Next Fall
Advising for next fall begins in a few days. When you’re planning your schedule keep two things in mind. First, be sure to leave Tuesdays free from 4:30–5:30 p.m. for Tea! And second, why not sign up for a course offered by one of our Strong College Fellows? Most of the Fellows are faculty members, and they are always delighted to have Strong College students in their classes. And you will not only be able to hear what they have to say in class, you can also talk to them at assorted Strong College events. So start filling in that fall schedule today!
Monday Dinners in Spencers
Tired of eating dinner all by yourself? Then come along to Spencers with Shelly McLain and a Strong College group this Monday and every Monday for the rest of the term. Meet in the JCR at 5:00 p.m. to walk over together, or find the crowd over there if you arrive late. See you at Spencers!
Strong College Elections
Elections for several student offices in Strong College will be coming up on April 14th & 15th. The offices that are open for 1999–2000 are College Council President, Welcoming Committee Chair, and SGA Representative. (This last position of SGA Representative is a new one that has not yet been finalized; it will depend upon the SGA creating representative positions in the residence halls for next year.) If you are interested in running for any of these positions (and we hope you are) please pick up a ballot petition from the bulletin board outside the College Office, fill it in, and return it to the Office by Wednesday, April 7th. That’s the way to get yourself on the ballot!
Ad Astra
Dr. O’Hara’s Book-of-the-Week this week is a copy autographed to Strong College of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy by Annette Gordon-Reed. Dr. Gordon-Reed spoke about her research last week in the EUC, and Dr. O’Hara picked up the book there and had it autographed for us. Sally Hemings was one of Jefferson’s slaves and a half-sister of his wife. It has now been established almost certainly that Jefferson was the father of some of her children, as well. Come down to the Office to give the book a browse today!
Speaking of Peabody Park, Dr. O’Hara and Dr. Jack Jezorek from the Department of Chemistry gave a presentation on Peabody Park to the Faculty Senate Forum last week. They are recommending plans for a comprehensive restoration of the Park for its centennial in 2001.
Heather Lloyd has donated two books on natural history to the Strong College Library. Thank you, Heather!
There will be another UNCG open house on Friday, April 9th. Watch for announcements on Strong-L if you’d like to help out by leading tours and greetings prospective students.
Strong thanks for the delicious goodies at Tea last week for the opening of the Art Show! They came courtesy of Joan Glynn in the Alumni House, with assistance from our own LaTonya Lipscomb.
Poem-of-the-Week
The Poem-of-the-Week is posted on the bulletin board outside the College Office and is usually reprinted here. This week’s poem, one of the great star-poems of the English language, is e.e. cummings’ retelling of the story of the Good Samaritan:
a man who had fallen among thieves
lay by the roadside on his back
dressed in fifteenthrate ideas
wearing a round jeer for a hatfate per a somewhat more than less
emancipated evening
had in return for consciousness
endowed him with a changeless grinwhereon a dozen staunch and leal
citizens did graze at pause
then fired by hypercivic zeal
sought newer pastures or becauseswaddled with a frozen brook
of pinkest vomit out of eyes
which noticed nobody he looked
as if he did not care to riseone hand did nothing on the vest
its wideflung friend clenched weakly dirt
while the mute trouserfly confessed
a button solemnly inert.Brushing from whom the stiffened puke
i put him all into my arms
and staggered banged with terror through
a million billion trillion stars
