The Regatta!

The Great, Grand, Spectacular, and Fabulous Third Annual Buffalo Creek Regatta was a huge success! The creek flowed, the food grilled, the boats raced, and an ab fab time was had by all. We offer hearty Strong College congratulations to the entire list of entrants: Michelle Marcelais with Hale-Bopp Marcelais, Todd Thomason with DIOSKOUROI, Andrew Winternitz with En Fuego II, Gwen Kovalak with Kovalak House, David Day with Assimilate This, Bruce Caldwell with USS ClaireSam, Sherrill Hayes with Let the Good Times Roll, the Lance Sisters with Boris the Spider, Pam Bulgin with Hrothgar, Chris Mengel with Stick, Laura Maschal with Cafmobile, John Flack with The Bagel Buoy, Rob Lawter with Queen Size, Laura Reese and Whitney Hartsell with Hula-Hanna, Shelly McLain with Apparition, the Monday Nitro Group with NWO, Scott Thomason with Execution of the Beachhead, Ray Morton, Jody Pait, and Matt Phillips with Mad Game, Durenda Johnson with D. Strong, Denise Tucker and Laurie White with Lady of Shallot, George Woodfin with USS Kasey, Kristen Leagan with Odyssey, Amanda Waterhouse with Saturn H2O House, RC Funk with Captain Kangaroo, the Mary Lives team with Cherry Barbie, the Enough Said team with Piercing Patrol, Tom Kirby-Smith with Penn 5, and the Shorty C’s Shorty team with Plank.

Regatta logistics are overwhelmingly complex, and nothing at all would have come off that day without the help of Jan Tulloss (Regatta Official), Laurie White (Strong College Prizemeister), Bob O’Hara (Strong College Buffalo Wrangler and Factotum), Cliff Rhodes (Master Chef), Shelly McLain (Official Starter), Matt Gillespie (Artiste), Scott Thomason (College Gamester), Ray Morton and Amanda Waterhouse (Propaganda Ministers), the members of the Strong College Council (Kelly Woodfin, President), and especially the Strong College Corps of Engineers (Tim Owens, Generalissimo; Heather Lloyd, First Lieutenant). See you all next year for the Fourth Annual Buffalo Creek Regatta!

The winner of this year’s election for President of the Strong College Council is Scott Thomason. Thomas Naylor Visits Strong College

Strong College recently had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Thomas Naylor, Emeritus Professor of Economics at Duke University and author of The Abandoned Generation. Dr. Naylor is an advocate of residential colleges nationwide and a critic of the declining quality of student life in big universities. He was very impressed by what he saw in Strong College and he congratulated us all on what we have accomplished in the face of many obstacles. An article by Dr. Naylor is now appearing on the bulletin board outside the College Office.

The Strong College Poem-of-the-Week is posted on the bulletin board outside the College Office and is usually reprinted here. This week’s poem is the anonymous limnological song “The Silver Swan”:

The silver swan, who living had no note,
When death approached, unlocked her silent throat,
Leaning her breast against the reedy shore,
Thus sung her first and last, and sung no more:
Farewell all joys! O death, come close mine eyes;
More geese than swans now live, more fools than wise.
