GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Important Information About Room Sign-Up for Next Year

Strong College students who intend to return next Fall must indicate their intentions next week by signing up on the evening of Wednesday, January 29th, or Thursday, January 30th, in the Junior Common Room. If you wish to return to your same room you should come to the JCR in person on Wednesday evening the 29th between 8:00–10:00 p.m. to sign up. If you wish to return to Strong College but not to the same room you should come on Thursday evening the 30th between 8:00–10:00 p.m. If you absolutely cannot be present in person you must put a written note under the door to the College Office (140) before the time of the sign-up giving your name and room number and stating whether you wish to return to the same room or a different room. This process can be very confusing, so it is important that everyone adhere to this schedule closely. Any student who misses these deadlines will be required to go through the Strong College admission process again, and may not be accepted again for next year. No exceptions will be made, because soon after the sign-up is complete the vacant spaces will be assigned to new students who will be joining us in the Fall.

The Council Wants You!

Are you looking for a way to get involved in the life of Strong College and meet some new people? Then come to the College Council meetings on Tuesday nights at 10:00 p.m. in the Committee Room. Under the direction of our own Kelly Woodfin (Princess-in-Charge) the Council is now making plans for the upcoming Valentine’s Day Dance which will take place on Wednesday evening, February 12th. Join them!

Strong College on the Web

Check out the bulletin board outside the College Office to see a display of the Strong College web pages. If you have your own personal page (as a number of Strong College students do, including David Effren, Rob Furr, Jared Karro, Reed Law, Derek Lidbom, Cliff Rhodes, James Smith, and Doug Yorke, we would be glad to make a link to it from the Strong College page. Just let Dr. O’Hara know the address for your page and he’ll take care of it.

Ad Astra

Strong College Fellow Steve Flynn was recently promoted to Associate Director of the Office of International Programs. Congratulations to Steve!

The next Borders Bookstore Breakaway (hosted by Pam Bulgin and Adam Cox) will be on Sunday, February 2nd. Meet in the JCR at 1:00 p.m. to ride out to the best bookstore in town.

In need of a Strong dollar or two? Dr. O’Hara will pay $1Strong each for the first 1997 penny, nickel, dime, and quarter presented to him for the College coin collection. Check you pocket change and help to build our collections while making yourself richer at the very same time.

Ever wonder why your name never appears in the Newsletter? Because you haven’t told us what you are up to! Have you recently won a prize, got a job, read a book, taken a trip, written an opera, washed your clothes, solved the four-color map problem, starred in a movie, baked a cake, flown a plane, or painted a picture? The inquiring minds of Strong College want to know! Just leave a note in the College Office and we’ll be glad to tell the world all about you.

Poem-of-the-Week

The Strong College Poem-of-the-Week is posted on the bulletin board outside the College Office and is usually reprinted here. This week’s poem is Walter de la Mare’s “The Birthnight” (ask Dr. O’Hara to play a magnificent musical setting of this poem for you in the College Office):

Dearest, it was a night
That in its darkness racked Orion’s stars;
A sighing wind ran faintly white
Along the willows, and the cedar boughs
Laid their wide hands in stealthy peace across
The starry silence of their antique moss:
No sound save rushing air
Cold, yet all sweet with Spring,
And in thy mother’s arms, couched weeping there,
Thou, lovely thing.
