GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Great Birthday Search
Strong College is always looking for things to celebrate, and one anniversary that we ought to honor every year is the birthday of our dear namesake, Professor Cornelia Strong. But, we don’t yet know when it is! In an effort to close this most horrifying lacuna in our knowledge, the Senior Tutor is offering a prize of $10Strong to the first person who can supply reliable evidence on this matter (i.e., a copy of her birth certificate, or a published record of some kind). This is what we do know: Miss Strong was born in 1877, probably in or near Walhalla, South Carolina; she died in Greensboro on June 3rd, 1955, and was buried in Walhalla. She had no near relatives at the time of her death, but it is likely that there are official records in South Carolina that could be found with a bit of effort through correspondence or by telephone. Many of the details of her life have been collected together on the Strong College web pages and may be of help, but her birthdate has still not been found. $10Strong will buy enough goodies to entertain your friends for days—why not join in the search? (And next we will have to plan a field trip to Walhalla.)
Stay Healthy
Charlotte Williams is hosting two important health-related programs for Strong College members this month. On Wednesday, November 15th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Junior Common Room come and join in a friendly discussion of the sexual issues that face college students. Then on Thursday, November 30th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Junior Common Room women students are invited to join Charlotte and Michelle Price for an informal question and answer session about contraceptive options. Free handouts and coupons redeemable at the health department will be available.
And not only that, Charlotte is sponsoring a movie night for students on her corridor on Friday, November 17th. Pizza, snacks, friends, food, and fun, all good for your mental health! Watch for more information.
SCR Lunches
The Strong College Fellows eat lunch every Friday in the Caf at one or two tables in the Strong College section (the room to the left of the large screen TV, behind the food-serving room). Each week they extend personal invitations to a few students to join them, so that over the course of the year most people will get an invitation. If you’re eager to join the crowd then just speak to Kim Hathcock (Room 167), our invitation coordinator, and she’ll move you up to the top of the list.
Points of Light
Strong College member David Effren appeared on the front page of the Carolinian last week at a memorial service for the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. David is president of Hillel, the Jewish students’ society on campus.
And speaking of the Carolinian, watch for regular photo features by our own Andrew Payne in almost every issue.
Have you signed up to join Strong-L, our e-mail discussion group? About 70 people are online already. Check out the sign-up sheet on the door of the College Office and add your name and e-mail address to it today.
