So Sad

— Someone just arrived at the Collegiate Way website on this late Friday evening by searching Google for the two phrases

“Ph.D. student”  “have no friends”

Are you looking after your graduate students? In the United States graduate student welfare is woefully neglected, even at the best universities (and this visitor came from one of the top-ranked universities in the country).

For good examples of graduate student pastoral care one must look outside the U.S., to the graduate residential colleges at institutions like the University of British Columbia, Cambridge University, Durham University, the University of Kent at Canterbury, the University of Otago, and Oxford University.

If you’re an isolated graduate student with no friends, you might consider putting in for a transfer to one of those institutions.
