GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Halloween Dance a Spooky Success!

The Annual Strong College Halloween Dance was a smashing success! The decorations were fantastic, the JCR resonated to the music all evening long, and all the ghoulish and ghostly party-goers had a wonderful time. And (drumroll, please) the Best Costume Prize went (in a manner of speaking) for the third year in a row to David Day, because it actually went to Adam Cox who came dressed as David Day. Congratulations to Adam (and Dave), and many thanks to the College Council for its outstanding work!

Books and Music Galore!

The first Sunday of every Month Adam Cox and Pam Bulgin host the Borders Bookstore Breakaway, and that means this Sunday, November 3rd! Borders is the only bookstore worthy of the name for miles around—they have millions of books, tapes, CDs, magazines, and newspapers, as well as their own coffee shop. Meet the bookstore gang in the Junior Common Room this Sunday at 12:00 noon sharp for the ride out to Borders (near the Four Seasons Mall), and return with us around 2:00 p.m. It’s free, it’s fun! Come along!

The Directory Is In!

This year’s new-and-improved Strong College directory is here at last and copies are being distributed as we type. If you haven’t gotten yours yet it will be appearing in the next day or two. This year for the first time the directory has pictures of the senior members and staff, as well as general information about Strong College and its history. We wanted to include all the student pictures as well, but we couldn’t afford to; that will be our goal for next year. Dr. O’Hara is the publishing genius behind the directory, so if you find it useful please let him know.

Power Politics on Election Day

Next Tuesday, November 5th, is Election Day, so don’t forget to vote early and often for all the candidates of your choice! And then come back and do your Strong College civic duty by joining Durenda Johnson and all the other Strong College politicos in the Game Room at 10:00 p.m. to watch the election returns on TV from all across the country. Winners! Losers! Democracy in action! (And not only that, refreshments will be served.) Don’t miss it!

Flecker!

And not only is Tuesday Election Day (and Guy Fawkes Day), it is also the most important day in the entire World Literary Calendar, to wit, James Elroy Flecker’s birthday. You will certainly not want to miss Tea that day!

Poem-of-the-Week

The Strong College Poem-of-the-Week is posted on the bulletin board outside the College Office and is usually reprinted here. This week’s poem is the chronically depressed James Elroy Flecker’s “November Eves” in honor of the poet himself, born November 5th, 1884:

November Evenings! Damp and still
They used to cloak Leckhampton hill,
And lie down close on the grey plain,
And dim the dripping window-pane,
And send queer winds like Harlequins
That seized our elms for violins
And struck a note so sharp and low
Even a child could feel the woe.

Now fire chased shadow round the room;
Tables and chairs grew vast in gloom:
We crept about like mice, while Nurse
Sat mending, solemn as a hearse,
And even our unlearned eyes
Half closed with choking memories.

Is it the mist or the dead leaves,
Or the dead men—November eves?
