GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to Two New Strong College Fellows!

Strong College is very pleased to welcome two new Fellows to the College: Ms. Joan Glynn, the University’s new Director of Alumni Affairs, and Dr. N. Frank Woods, Director of African-American Studies. They will be joining us for Tea every week, and are looking forward to getting to know all the members of Strong College. Please greet them and make them feel welcome!

Library Opens for the Semester

The Strong College Library has resumed operation for the semester under the most capable direction of Susan Wyant. The Library will be open Sunday–Thursday evenings, and Monday–Thursday afternoons; the schedule is posted on the Library door. We still have a few gaps in the afternoon schedule, so if you have some free time in the afternoon that you would like to devote to study and service to your College, stop by the College Office to add your name to the list of librarians (and start accumulating Strong Dollars!).

Congratulations!

The Editor of the Strong College Newsletter congratulates himself on this, the 50th issue. (A deluxe leather-bound selection, Best of the Strong College Newsletter, will be appearing soon in bookstores near you.)

Ever Wonder…

Ever wonder why you never appear in the Newsletter? It’s because you don’t tell us what you’re up to! Have you recently: (1) Gotten a job? (2) Won a prize? (3) Read a good book? (4) Read a bad book? (5) Had a deep thought? (6) Solved Fermat’s Last Theorem? (7) Starred in a movie? (8) Broken the warp barrier? (9) Written a symphony? (10) Learned to read Hittite? (11) Struck oil? (12) Joined the army? (13) Changed your major? (14) Gotten a new tattoo? (15) Decided to run for president? Or, (16) Done anything else of note? The rest of your College wants to hear! There is a box just inside the door to the College Office that accepts items for the Newsletter at any time—drop off your news there and your name will be in print before you know it.

Campus Civility Report

A new schedule of events at the UNCG School of Music is now up on the bulletin board outside the College Office. Most of the events are free, and our School of Music is one of the best in the country—be sure to take advantage of what they have to offer us all!

The cookie jar in the College Office is now sporting a Valentine theme, with a special on kisses (three for $1Strong). If you have a Strong Dollar to cash in and a person to impress, this could be just the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Contributions to the Lemur Fund continue to roll in from James Vines, Kim Hathcock, and Ann Smith (an especially generous donation). We have shot past the half-way mark! Would you like to help us adopt a lemur? Check the door to the College Office for details.

Poem-of-the-Week

The Strong College Poem-of-the-Week appears on the bulletin board outside the College Office. This week’s poem is John Masefield’s “Sea-Fever” (1912), in honor of the Challenger Seven who died January 28th, 1986, ten years ago this week:

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

STRONG COLLEGE CALENDAR

Everyday

Join your fellow Strong College members for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in our section of the Caf. It’s a great way to get to know people, and recognize the faces of other Strong College members.
